The Magicians' Guild by Trudi Canavan
Goodreads synopsis:
"We should expect this young woman to be more powerful than our average novice, possibly even more powerful than the average magician."

This year, like every other, the magicians of Imardin gather to purge the city of undesirables. Cloaked in the protection of their sorcery, they move with no fear of the vagrants and miscreants who despise them and their work—until one enraged girl, barely more than a child, hurls a stone at the hated invaders . . . and effortlessly penetrates their magical shield.

What the Magicians' Guild has long dreaded has finally come to pass. There is someone outside their ranks who possesses a raw power beyond imagining, an untrained mage who must be found and schooled before she destroys herself and her city with a force she cannot yet control.

I bought this one a couple of years ago now, and I still haven't gotten around to reading it, despite being really excited to read it when I bought it. Unfortunately, I think what puts me off is the size of text in a book - if a book has really small print, it's a little harder to read as quickly as you would a book that had larger print - this is one of the reasons that I love my Kindle so much.
I know that I will eventually read it, but I think I might have to replace my hard copies with eBook versions so that the small print is not such a problem. It does sound like a really fantastic series, and again, something that it quite different to the type of fantasy I would usually read, so I know it would make a nice change. Might have a look at getting the eBook for this one when I have a break from University work in the new year!
