Because You'll Never Meet Me by Leah Thomas **Blog Tour & Giveaway**

I have something really special to share with you guys today, and I'm so so excited about it! To celebrate the release of Because You'll Never Meet Me in the UK on July 2nd, I have a very exciting letter from main character and hermit Oliver, which makes up the first chapter of what is proving to be a very special book (and I'm only a few chapters in!). I also have a giveaway where you can win one of three copies of the book to read for yourself! Today is a good day, indeed. But before we start, here is a little info about the book.

Because You'll Never Meet Me
Series: None
Pages: 344
Publisher: Bloomsbury Children's Books
Release date: 2nd July 2015
Buy: Book Depository | Amazon UK | Amazon US | Waterstones

Goodreads synopsis:
In a stunning literary debut, two boys on opposite ends of the world begin an unlikely friendship that will change their lives forever.

Ollie and Moritz are best friends, but they can never meet. Ollie is allergic to electricity. Contact with it causes debilitating seizures. Moritz’s weak heart is kept pumping by an electronic pacemaker. If they ever did meet, Ollie would seize. But Moritz would die without his pacemaker. Both hermits from society, the boys develop a fierce bond through letters that become a lifeline during dark times—as Ollie loses his only friend, Liz, to the normalcy of high school and Moritz deals with a bully set on destroying him.

A story of impossible friendship and hope under strange circumstances, this debut is powerful, dark and humorous in equal measure. These extraordinary voices bring readers into the hearts and minds of two special boys who, like many teens, are just waiting for their moment to shine.

The Duff: Movie Goody Bag Giveaway!

Hey guys! I have another really exciting post for you today, courtesy of the guys at Hachette Children's Books and Entertainment One.
To celebrate the release of The Duff movie on 6th April, you could win an exclusive goody bag, which includes the movie tie-in version of the book, an awesome DUFF tshirt, a Duff phone case and a super-cute tote bag! I'm so, so excited about this, but before we get started with the giveaway stuff, I'm going to tell you a little bit about The Duff!

The Duff
Series: None
Pages: 343
Publisher: Hodder Children's Books
Release date (movie ed): 25th February 2015

Add to Goodreads

The Duff follows 17-year-old Bianca Piper, an ordinary girl with two best friends, a cynical outlook on life, and a particular hatred of the slimy (but attractive) man-slut, Wesley Rush. During a night out at their local teen hangout, The Nest, Wesley approaches Bianca in an attempt to attract one of her 'hottie' best friends ... but why Bianca? Because she's the Duff: Designated Ugly Fat Friend. If Wesley speaks to their Duff, he'll stand a better chance of bedding one of the two hottie friends, right? But things end up being far more complicated than just protecting her best friends from the man-whore and getting him to stay away from her.
Desperate for a distraction from a disastrous home life, Bianca seeks distraction in all the wrong places, and soon things are going wrong in ways she hadn't thought possible.

I'm reading The Duff at the moment, and I'm absolutely adoring it – Bianca's snarky, sarcastic and humorous voice really comes through in the writing, and I've found myself laughing out loud more times than I can count, and I'm only a third of the way through! The story grips you straight away, and I loved Bianca and her friends from the start. I'm looking forward to seeing where it's going to go next.

One obvious issue that the book raises is bullying, and more specifically, bullying because of a label. That's why Entertainment One and The Duff have joined forces with Ditch the Label, a UK-based anti-bullying charity that focusses on ridding the world of these labels. If you, or anyone you know is suffering from bullying, make sure to check out the Ditch the Label website for advice or someone to talk to.

Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor **UK Giveaway!**

When I met Laini last year in Birmingham!
Guys! I am literally so excited right now!
Thanks to the lovely people at Hodder and Chapter 5, I have a seriously awesome giveaway for you! To celebrate the paperback release of Dreams of Gods and Monsters, the final instalment in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, I have one copy to give away to one lucky follower of Pen to Paper!

It's been ages since I've hosted a giveaway, and I can't think of a better author to help kickstart them again! I had the pleasure of meeting Laini at a signing in Birmingham (I was also working the event) last year, and she's an incredibly friendly and inspiring author (and that hair! LOVE).

If you've not heard of the series before, here is a little bit of info to get you started!

Dreams of Gods and Monsters

Goodreads synopsis:
This is the final book in the trilogy – if you've not read the other books, this synopsis will contain spoilers.

By way of a staggering deception, Karou has taken control of the chimaera rebellion and is intent on steering its course away from dead-end vengeance. The future rests on her, if there can even be a future for the chimaera in war-ravaged Eretz.

Common enemy, common cause.

When Jael's brutal seraph army trespasses into the human world, the unthinkable becomes essential, and Karou and Akiva must ally their enemy armies against the threat. It is a twisted version of their long-ago dream, and they begin to hope that it might forge a way forward for their people.

And, perhaps, for themselves. Toward a new way of living, and maybe even love.

But there are bigger threats than Jael in the offing. A vicious queen is hunting Akiva, and, in the skies of Eretz ... something is happening. Massive stains are spreading like bruises from horizon to horizon; the great winged stormhunters are gathering as if summoned, ceaselessly circling, and a deep sense of wrong pervades the world.

What power can bruise the sky?

From the streets of Rome to the caves of the Kirin and beyond, humans, chimaera and seraphim will fight, strive, love, and die in an epic theater that transcends good and evil, right and wrong, friend and enemy.

At the very barriers of space and time, what do gods and monsters dream of? And does anything else matter?

Goodreads synopsis:
The heart-warming and inspirational true story of a stroke survivor who sends uplifting letters all around the world, providing her with a lifeline in her own darkest moments.

In the summer of 2011, aged only 22, Jodi Ann Bickley contracted a serious brain infection that would change her life forever. Jodi had been performing at Camp Bestival on the Isle of Wight. Returning with pockets full of glitter, and her favourite bands' songs still playing in her head, She thought the happy memories would last forever. A week later, writhing in pain on the doctor's surgery floor and unable to put the pain she was suffering into words, Jodi found out that she had been bitten by a tick and contracted a serious brain infection.

Learning to write and walk again was just the start of the battle. In the months that followed Jodi struggled with the ups and downs of her health and the impact it had on her loved ones. Some days the illness was too much for Jodi to bear and she found herself wondering whether she could go on. She had two choices: either to give up now or to do something meaningful with the time she had been given. Jodi chose the latter. This is the story how she turned her life around, and in doing so, touched the lives of millions.
I do not usually go for books like this; non-fiction, that is. And I don't think I've ever read a book that sits in the 'self help' section of a bookshop before, either. But when One Million Lovely Letters arrived in the bookshop where I work, I read the synopsis on the inside cover, I read about Jodi for the first time, and I had to know more. She sounded like such a wonderful person, and her project so uplifting, that I felt I needed the book in my life.
That was just over a month ago. I'd been telling myself that I was saving reading the book for when I needed a good pick-me-up, but then I started sorting through some of my books, and thought I'd read a couple of pages. Less then 20 hours later, I'd finished the entire thing (and that was with having to sleep, eat and go to work in-between.
To say I was instantly hooked would be an understatement.

**Pen to Paper's Favourite Reads of 2013** & INTERNATIONAL GIVEAWAY

2013 was, at least for me, an excellent year for books. And I know you may be thinking 'but isn't every year a good year for books?', the answer to which would be 'absolutely!', but 2013 seemed to me to be a cut above!
I've read some real gems over the past twelve months, and even discovered a new all-time favourite. It would seem rude of me, then, not to list my favourites for you to go out and find delight in yourselves. My list is in no particular order, but my absolute favourite, the book I've added to my all-time favourite list, will be at the end, saving the best until last.

Oh! And before I get started, feel free to comment, letting us know what books you read in 2013, and which were your favourites.

My Review

Goodreads synopsis:
I've left some clues for you. If you want them, turn the page. If you dont, put the book back on the shelf, please.

Lily has left a red notebook full of challenges on a favorite bookstore shelf, waiting for just the right guy to come along and accept its dares. But is Dash that right guy? Or are Dash and Lily only destined to trade dares, dreams, and desires in the notebook they pass back and forth at locations across New York? Could their in-person selves possibly connect as well as their notebook versions? Or will they be a comic mismatch of disastrous proportions? Rachel Cohn and David Levithan have written a love story that will have readers perusing bookstore shelves, looking and longing for a love (and a red notebook) of their own.

I read Dash & Lily's Book of Dares not just once in 2013, but twice. The first time I read it was in March (a weird time of the year to read it, I know, but it was snowing and I fancied it), and adored it. So much that, when I set up the YA book club at the bookstore I work at, I chose it as our introductory book (seeing as our first meeting was in December, this seemed fitting), so I got to read it for the second time. It's very rare that I will read a book twice, especially in the same year - it has to be a very special book for me to do that (too many books, so little time, kind of situation) - but I loved it just as much the second time around, if not more. The first time around, I was really focusing on the story, but the second time around, because I already knew the story, I was focusing more on the characters and what they were saying, and I realised this time just how witty they are.
This book has a lot of awesome qualities, and it made me fall even more in love with David Levithan (as if that was possible!). Definitely one that all YA fans should read, and not just at Christmas, but all year round!

**Blog Tour** Faceless by Jus Accardo [Denazen #2.5]: Guest Post & International Giveaway

I am a huge fan of Jus Accardo and the Denazen series, so of course, when I was asked if I would like to take part in the blog tour for Faceless (the second short story for the series, that takes place after book two, Toxic), I leapt at the chance.
Because I have already interviewed Jus in the past (click here to read it), this time I opted for a guest post from Jus, and I think you're going to love it - especially if you're already a fan of the series!
But first, here is a little bit of quick info on the book.

Series: Denazen #2.5
Pages: 138
Publisher: Entangled
Release date: 18th March 2013

Add to Goodreads

Goodreads synopsis:
If you have not read the previous books in this series, do not read this synopsis, as it contains spoilers.

My name is Brandt Cross, and I died. Again… I'm living in the body of a Six named Douglass Cain, a certifiable scumbag whose ability is on Zendean Industries—AKA Denazen's—most wanted list. There’s some serious bad going down, and Ginger, the leader of the Underground, sent me undercover to obtain information because people are dying. My cousin, Dez, is dying… Denazen thought they’d found a cure for the Supremacy decline, but they were wrong. That’s the bad news. The good news? Franklin Wentz. Wentz, the owner of a genetic research company, is brilliant and just a little bit crazy. He’s unwittingly created a formula that may cure the sick Supremacy kids, and everyone wants it—including Devin, the super hot Resident. Get the formula. Save the day. Don’t fall for the hot spy. Piece of cake.

Breathe by Sarah Crossan: Blog Tour & UK/Ireland Giveaway

Breathe is the fantastic new novel by Sarah Crossan, which I've recently read, and will be reviewing at some point in the next week. I read her debut, The Weight of Water, earlier in the year, so when this was announced I was ridiculously excited - and it definitely lived up to my expectations!
So I'm obviously really excited to be able to take part in the blog tour for the book! This means that I'm able to bring you an extract from the book and a UK/Ireland Giveaway too!
But before we get into that, we have a quick message from Sarah about the environmental ideas in the book.

Breathe has a very strong environmental message. What things do you do to be environmentally friendly? It is so hard to be environmentally conscientious when we live in such a throwaway world. But I do the best I can. I reuse my shopping bags and recycle anything I can. I have also been working hard not to buy things I don’t need. That’s been the hardest thing because it’s easy to convince myself that I really need silly things when really the desire is just fleeting.

YouTube Giveaway! 1000 Subscribers & Q&A requests

Hey! So if you didn't know already, Pen to Paper expanded over to YouTube, after I fell in love with doing book haul videos, a few months ago. Since then I have been attempting to get more videos up there, and have been doing pretty well so far.
So well, in fact, that just over a week ago, I hit 1000 subscribers on my channel *HURRAY*

I decided that, because this is such an unexpected milestone (I hadn't intended on using the channel so much, to begin with, after all), to celebrate it in style. The first thing I have decided to do, is a Q&A video, so I'm throwing the doors wide open, and saying ask me anything. I realised that because the channel was set up to go along with this blog, I hadn't really introduced myself on YouTube - so this is your chance to get asking me anything you want to know about me.
Hopefully I will be getting the answers video filmed in a couple of weeks time.

I am also celebrating, in true Pen to Paper style, with an international giveaway. The prize of this giveaway is one book up to £10 at The Book Depository! All the details for this giveaway, and how to enter, are on the video details here.
But enough of this written ramble... just check out the video below, and then head over to the YouTube page to enter the giveaway, and get your questions in.

The Obsidian Mirror by Catherine Fisher **Review & International Giveaway**

The Obsidian Mirror
by Catherine Fisher
Series: Chronoptika #1
Pages: 400
Publisher: Hodder Children's Books
Release date: 4th October 2012
Buy: Book Depository | Amazon UK | Amazon US | Waterstones

Add it to Goodreads
Thanks to Hachette UK for my review copy

Goodreads synopsis:
Jake's father disappears while working on mysterious experiments with the obsessive, reclusive Oberon Venn. Jake is convinced Venn has murdered him. But the truth he finds at the snow-bound Wintercombe Abbey is far stranger ... The experiments concerned a black mirror, which is a portal to both the past and the future. Venn is not alone in wanting to use its powers. Strangers begin gathering in and around Venn's estate: Sarah - a runaway, who appears out of nowhere and is clearly not what she says, Maskelyne - who claims the mirror was stolen from him in some past century. There are others, a product of the mirror's power to twist time. And a tribe of elemental beings surround this isolated estate, fey, cold, untrustworthy, and filled with hate for humans. But of them all, Jake is hell-bent on using the mirror to get to the truth. Whatever the cost, he must learn what really happened to his father.

When I first picked this up, I thought I'd quite like it - especially after rating Incarceron 4 stars, last year. I didn't, for a moment, expect it to be even better. But it was.
The characters were much better (even though those in Incarceron were still good), and the world-building was on a whole new level. I doubt that it could get much better than this.

I'm going to start with Jake. When we're introduced to him at the beginning of the novel, he appears to be little more than a troubled, headstrong, and particularly stubborn teenage boy, with little regret for the pain or trouble he causes others around him. But it turns out, that there is much more to him than first meets the eye.
He's a very self-assured and confident character, at times, but is still acutely aware of his own need for a father figure in his life. He also shows a deeply ingrained intelligence and understanding of the world around him, even when that world is turned upside-down, and inside-out! And, even though he is incredibly focused on his personal mission (getting his father back), he can also show a great deal of empathy, at times.
In other words, his character is definitely not a flat one, and I ended up really liking him, despite first impressions.

There are, obviously, far too many characters in this, for me to mention them all (though I'd definitely like to - they're all fantastic, in their own way), but I do feel that I should mention the Shee. Even after finishing the book, I'm not entirely sure that I understand exactly what they are, but that's definitely a part of what makes them so captivating!
They are basically immortal beings, similar to some incarnations of the Fae, but they almost live outside of time, but inside all times, as well (this will make sense, if you read the book). They're just so interesting - especially Summer, their Queen, and I can't wait to see what happens with them, in the next book! They are definitely a large part of what makes this book so unique.

It's my Blogoversary!! **Signed** Gail Carriger Books Giveaway!

So, today is the today!
Pen to Paper is one year old!
I believe more celebrations (and a cake!) are in order, and this means, one final, incredible, giveaway. I have run two more giveaways, throughout the week, both of which can be found HERE. We've had a giveaway of a signed copy of Entice by Jessica Shirvinton, a signed copy of A Witch in Love by Ruth Warburton, and the books for this giveaway are also signed! (We wouldn't want to break the pattern now, would we?!)
So what's up for grabs, on Pen to Paper's first birthday?! Stick with me, and you'll find out!

Soulless (Parasol Protectorate #1)
by Gail Carriger
Pages: 320
Publisher: Orbit
Release: 2nd September 2010
Goodreads Page

Goodreads synopsis:
First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.

Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire - and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.

With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?

Timeless (Parasol Protectorate #5)
by Gail Carriger
Pages: 384
Publisher: Orbit
Release: 1st March 2012
Goodreads Page

Goodreads synopsis:

If you have not read the previous books in this series, do not read the following synopsis, as it does contain spoilers!

Alexia Tarabotti, Lady Maccon, has settled into domestic bliss. Of course, being Alexia, such bliss involves integrating werewolves into London High society, living in a vampire's second best closet, and coping with a precocious toddler who is prone to turning supernatural willy-nilly. Even Ivy Tunstell's acting troupe's latest play, disastrous to say the least, cannot put a damper on Alexia's enjoyment of her new London lifestyle. Until, that is, she receives a summons from Alexandria that cannot be ignored. With husband, child, and Tunstells in tow, Alexia boards a steamer to cross the Mediterranean. But Egypt may hold more mysteries than even the indomitable Lady Maccon can handle. What does the vampire Queen of the Alexandria Hive really want from her? Why is the God-Breaker Plague suddenly expanding? And how has Ivy Tunstell suddenly become the most popular actress in all the British Empire?

Gail and I, back in March
So, as I said at the top of the post, both of these books are signed by the author. I got them signed personally, when I went to meet her, with Jenny from Chocolate Chunky Munkie, back in March.
I read Soulless, earlier in the year, and I can safely say that it is one of the funniest books I have ever read! You can read my review HERE. (I also interviewed her, which is definitely worth a read! Click here to go to the post). I'm yet to read more in the series, but I definitely plan on reading the second one, before 2012 draws to a close!

Why do I have books 1 & 5 as a giveaway (a weird combination, surely?!), you might ask. Well, they are going to be given away separately. If you've not come across this series yet, then you can enter for book 1 (and book 5, if you wish, but if you win the latter, you're going to have to buy 4 other books - although, this probably won't put you off :P Just don't read the blurb!). However, if you are already familiar with the series, and have already read book one, then you can enter for the fifth and final book in the series.
Either way, I've got you covered ;)

A Witch in Love (Winter #2)
by Ruth Warburton
Pages: 416
Publisher: Hodder Children's Books
Release: 5th July 2012
Goodreads Page

Waterstones synopsis:

If you have not read A Witch in Winter, but intend to, do not read this synopsis, as it contains mild spoilers.

Anna still finds it hard to believe that Seth loves her and has vowed to suppress her powers, no matter what. But magic - like love - is uncontrollable and soon, Anna is being hunted. Abe wants Anna to embrace her power, while Seth is pushing Anna to accept that his feelings are real. She finally does ...a moment too late. Suddenly, it's like the Salem witch trials all over again: burnings, torture and faceless judgements. In the face of the ultimate betrayal, who will save her? The second novel in the Winter trilogy, this follows the critically acclaimed debut A WITCH IN WINTER.

Ruth and I together!
(She's on the right)
This giveaway is to win an ARC copy of the book (which still has the completed artwork on the front), that I got signed by the author in person.
Ruth is a really lovely lady, and was more than happy to sign the book for you guys. She hoped that whoever won the book, would enjoy reading it.
I absolutely loved the first book in the series, A Witch in Winter (you can read my review of it here), and I'm really excited to read this sequel, and find out what happens.
I will mention this now as well - if you do not win this giveaway, I will be holding another (although for an unsigned copy), alongside my review, which will hopefully be within the next month! So never fear!

Right! So we need to lay down the rules and guidelines again!

  • You must be a follower of Pen to Paper via Google Friend Connect to enter. This giveaway is a thank you to my followers, so why not become one of them?
  • The giveaway is international, and I will be posting the prize out personally. As the book is rather heavy, and the postage will undoubtedly be a lot, unfortunately, if the book gets lost in the post, I will not be able to replace it :(
  • There are optional extra entries for this giveaway. They are optional, but could be the difference between you winning, or someone else taking the prize.
  • I reserve the right to disqualify anyone who has not fulfilled the mandatory entry requirements, or anyone who has entered extra entries, but who has not fulfilled those tasks in their entirety.
  • I will email the winner when the giveaway is over, and they will have 48 hours to reply to my email, in order to claim their prize. If I have had no response within this time period, I'm afraid they will forfeit their prize, and I will have to draw another winner.
  • Please do not leave your email address anywhere on my blog. I use Rafflecopter to keep your details safe, so please take advantage of this.
  • The giveaway will end on September 30th 2012, at 23:59 EST.
The boring bit is over and done with now, so all you have left to do, is make sure you're a follower via GFC, and then get yourself entered in the Rafflecopter below!
Good luck :)

Lazy Days of Summer Giveaway Hop *International*

Summer has finally arrived here in England, and I can't think of a better way to celebrate, than with a giveaway! I always say it - but I love being able to give something back to you guys!
So, I've decided that, as it's summer, and the sun is shining, I'm going to give you a bit of freedom, and say that the winner of this giveaway hop, will get to choose a book from the Book Depository, up to the value of $10.
That could be anything - your beach read for your holidays, the latest Dytopian, a thrilling high fantasy novel - anything you please! *You could even go with that Fifty Shades of Grey that everyone's talking about... if you're over 18... *shifty eyes* ...*So yeah, there you have it. As long as The Book Depository ships free to your country, then you are able to enter, which makes it pretty much international. HURRAH!

I'm going to get serious for just a moment, if you'll allow me, and talk about the rules for this giveaway.

  • The giveaway is international, as I have already said. You must be a follower of Pen to Paper via Google Friend Connect (GFC) to qualify for entry. I reserve the right to disqualify any entrant who does not comply with this rule.
  • I will email the giveaway winner when the entries are closed, and that person will have 48 hours to reply to my email, in order to claim their prize. If I do not hear back from them within that time limit, they will lose their prize, and I will have to draw another winner.
  • As I am shipping the prize via The Book Depository, I cannot be held responsible for any lost or damaged books, but I will do my best to rectify the situation with TBD.
  • There will be one winner, who will get to choose one book from the Book Depository, up to the value of $10.
  • Please do not leave your email address anywhere on this blog. I use Rafflecopter to keep your details safe, so please take advantage of this.
  • The giveaway will end on August 1st 2012 at 23:59 EST.
Also, I should mention that this giveaway hop is hosted by the wonder Kathy at I am a Reader, Not a Writer, and co-hosted by Coloromitry. You can view the other blogs participating in this giveaway hop, by CLICKING HERE.
